Women’s health: athletes get more from their game whilst looking after their wellbeing

Readers of our blog pages will know that we advocate the benefits of physiotherapy. We also aim to diversify the topics we address, either directly or through our excellent guest blogs, to look at overall health and wellbeing. This blog is no different, this time considering female sports and welfare.

Field sports in their various forms have been enjoyed for years, and it is fantastic to see women’s competitions, such as football, rugby and hockey, surging forward over the last few years. Long overdue some might fairly argue, but real progress is being made and I am sure this will continue.

Likewise, the science of women’s sports has moved forward in caring for the physical needs of female athletes, along with their overall wellbeing and comfort. As an example of this, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) on their England Rugby website has an excellent section on women and girls’ health and wellbeing. Within this, a range of toolkits provide information on a range of important issues.

For this blog, we have referenced two of the RFU’s toolkit modules, namely:

  • Breast Health Toolkit: Sports Bra Fitting Guide

  • Menstrual Health & Cycle

Both guides are based on robust research and experience and can help a field athlete get more from their game, whilst - vitally - looking after their wellbeing. Links to each guide can be found here:

Menstrual Health

With some great insightful guides available as to how to help when planning your sporting successes, there should be nothing stopping you from enjoying your chosen sport this winter. Don’t forget that physiotherapy care is not too far away if you suffer a strain, injury or other issue.

We look forward to hearing from you and please feel free to call us on 07309 272 555 or email Physio@Lifemadesimple.co.uk. Life Made Simple - expert physiotherapy in Guildford and Surrey.
